Patrick G. Leuner ASLA, APLD
From the wild beauty of southern Africa to the lush Pacific Northwest, Patrick’s instincts drew him to a region where the natural environment is itself a garden.
Patrick was raised in Keetmanshoop and Windhoek, Namibia. He moved with his family to Manzini and Mbabane, Swaziland in 1963 and moved to Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa in 1964.
Patrick graduated with a degree in ornamental horticulture and parks administration from Pretoria Technical College in 1972. He completed a 5 year horticultural apprenticeship with the Parks Department of Johannesburg. In 1973 Patrick was one of five students accepted worldwide to study ornamental horticulture at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and graduated in 1974.
He returned to the Johannesburg Parks Department as a District Officer to complete his contract work in horticulture. Patrick immigrated to the United States via three months in South America to further his studies. He was accepted by the University of Oregon, Eugene and graduated in the summer of 1981 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. During his studies he was able to teach horticulture and plant ID in the landscape department.
Patrick moved to Seattle and gained his internship in design construction and maintenance working with a number of well-known landscape design and construction firms in the Seattle area from 1981 through 1986. In 1987 he teamed up with his wife, Betsy, and started Leuner Landscape Design, Inc. on Bainbridge Island.
